Artist Statement:
My work is made using Cone 6 Stoneware. Most pieces are a combination of coil building and slab building techniques. I treat the surface by combining coloured slip, crackle slip and fine sand. I begin by applying a layer of black slip followed by multiple other colours to create an underpainting. This surface is then covered by a wash of white slip. I will go back to the layers after they are dried and reveal different areas using some water or scratching through the surface with various tools. Once the piece has its first firing I will continue to select parts of the surface and enhance them with underglaze pencils, as drawing is an important part of my practice. Before the second and final firing I often choose to incorporate patches of glaze.
