Collection: Monica Rosenthal

I have been working as a ceramic artist for more than 15 years. In the last few years, there has been a dramatic shift in my work, from wheel thrown functional wares to an exploration of hand building. This has led to conceptual wall pieces, ceramic jewelry, hand carved lamps, and most recently coiled vessels.

I had the good fortune to live in Japan for four years in the early 80’s. That experience combined with continuous travel, and a lifetime of looking at contemporary art, have influenced my aesthetic and my interests.

My clay practice is diverse, but in some way usually reflects my interest in history, where I am trying to redefine historical references in a contemporary context. It also often reflects my passion for textiles. In that case, surface texture and pattern are important, through carving and other means. Often there is an architectural underpinning to my hand-built forms. Lately I have become interested in “reusing” thrifted materials, as a way of keeping them out of landfills and as a creative challenge. I am usually out of my technical comfort zone when starting a new project. It keeps my clay life interesting!
