Artist Statement:
I am collector by nature. When I see something interesting, especially for potential pottery usage, I acquire it, usually in nature or in thrift stores. It can take years before I actually use my acquisition. This piece started with the catalpa seed pod, which I thought would make a marvellous handle. Currently, I am using various slips in my work, as I like the uneven texture they produce and the variation in colour. The shock of textured blue on the interior, and the foot, wake up the piece, and the sgraffito provides the interest. This piece is strictly non-functional, so there is no glaze usage. Recently I have also been exploring waxed thread and rattan wrapping in my work.
Material: Stoneware, cone 6, dried catalpa seed pod, blue waxed threading.
Method: Hand built, slips, underglaze, sgraffito, waxed thread binding.
