Collection: Susan Low-Beer

Susan Low-Beer received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at Mount Allison University and her Masters of Fine Arts, with a major in painting, at Cranbrook Academy of Art.

In 1999 she received the Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence in Crafts and in 2000 was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.

She has exhibited internationally in Europe, United States, Japan and Korea, as well as nationally in both juried and invitational exhibitions and has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards.

She is represented among others, in the collections of the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa, the Gardiner Muesum in Toronto, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in New Brunswick, the National Museum of Modern Art in Japan, and the Mint Museum of Craft and Design in North Carolina.

Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions and many of her installations have travelled. In the late 1990's her exhibition Still Dances was mounted at the Craft Council of Ontario on McCall Street with a catalogue, with expectations of travel but due to lack of funds it did not happen. Her exhibition Tools for Daily Living went to Material in Quebec, McClure Gallery in Montreal and the Karsh Masson Gallery in Ottawa as well as the Japan Foundation in Toronto. Rocksbreath, an installation in the courtyard of the Burlington Art Gallery travelled to the Clay and Glass Gallery as well as to the Visual Art Centre of Clarington.

She has shown in group exhibitions including "Aspects of Figurative Ceramics", at the Riley Hawk Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio, "The International Exposition of Sculpture Objects& Function Art", in Chicago and New York City, "Survivors in Search of a Voice:The Art of Courage", an exhibition that toured internationally and "The Eighth Chunichi International Exhibition of Ceramic Art" in Japan.

She completed residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Czech Republic on an exchange program and in 2018 was invited to a residency at the International Ceramic Studio in Kecshemet, Hungary.

In 2016-2018, she had a retrospective called Embodiment-30 Years of Sculpture, which was shown at the Art Gallery of Algoma, Norfolk Art Centre and the Clay and Glass Gallery. A catalogue was produced.

Her most current work Specimen, was curated by Sheila McMath and debuted in a companion exhibition to the Retrospective, Waterloo, 2018. In 2022 it was exhibited at RiverBrink Museum, Ontario and in 2023 it was shown at Espace Pierre Debain in Gatineau,Quebec and in the summer it was exhibited at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredricton, N.B. In February of 2024 it will be at St Vincents University Art Gallery in Halifax.
